Lagos Business School 2018 Dean’s Cup Tournament gets fitting final as EMBA 23 lift trophy

The Executive MBA (EMBA) 23 class have emerged champions of the 2018 edition of Lagos Business School (LBS) Dean’s Cup. Held at the LBS football pitch on Saturday, July 16, 2018, the final game in the annual football competition saw the Modular Executive MBA (MEMBA) 6 team clash with the EMBA 23 team.

The LBS Dean’s Cup competition is one of the avenues through which the School’s core value of community is internalised, and participants are able to interact and network outside the classroom.

Tunde Nwofor of EMBA 23 set the tone for the game when he scored the first goal in the 10th minute but MEMBA 6’s Tobi Ajayi, who won the highest goal scorer of the tournament, was quick to equalise with a free kick in the 22nd minute.

The defining goal in the game came in the 22nd minute of the intense second half with an intentional free kick served by EMBA 23’s Samson Sonusi. Once the final whistle was blown, the teams erupted into dancing, laughter and pure joy for the close of another exciting competition.

LBS Dean, Enase Okonedo, who was on ground to present the brand new trophy to the winning team, thanked all the participating teams, sponsors and School staff who were responsible for the event’s success. Okonedo added, “The MBA programmes are very intensive and the competition is how participants get to ease off the academic rigour. I hope that this year’s competition has succeeded in helping participants relax as much as it has brought them closer”.

Speaking on the value of the sporting event, Tournament Director, Henry Onukwuba said, “In many leading business schools including LBS, sports is part of the academic experience. Classroom studies are not enough, activities like this are meant to complete the experience”. He also added that participants engaged better with this year’s competition as classes were well-represented on the ground.

Other winners of the tournament are Gbenga Olaoye and Tunde Amoo of EMBA 23 who won Best Goalkeeper and Most Valuable Player respectively. EMBA 22 won the Fairplay Team trophy while EMBA 23 walked away the Best Supporters Club award.

Expressing his excitement, Tunde Amoo said, “I feel very great to be the man of the tournament; we trained almost every week before this final match and that has been exhausting but today, we got the results we deserve”.

The 2018 Dean’s Cup was supported by Coronation Trustees, Microvis Microfinance Bank, Culture Communication, AMRO Ambulance, Braingrace Ambulance, Fewchore Finance Company and the EMBA 22 & 23 and MEMBA 6 classes.
