Overview

HR professionals often find themselves at a crossroads: should they prioritize the well-being of employees or focus on the metrics that drive the bottom line? These two orientations—one emphasizing the ‘human’ aspect and the other focusing on ‘resources’—shape how HR contributes to organizational success.

On the one hand, prioritizing employee engagement, wellness, satisfaction, and overall happiness can create a positive work environment, making the organization a great place to work. Advocates argue that when employees thrive, so does the organization. However, a challenge often arises in drawing a clear connection between these activities and the organization’s ability to meet its strategic goals.

On the other hand, the resource-focused orientation emphasizes performance metrics and alignment with top leadership priorities. This approach may seem more pragmatic and directly tied to business outcomes, but it risks overlooking the critical human element that drives sustainable success.

For organizations to truly thrive, HR professionals must integrate both orientations, simultaneously valuing the ‘human’ and the ‘resource’ aspects. This balanced approach ensures that HR strategies are not only aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives but also contribute to a sustainable and thriving work environment. Misalignment can lead to disengagement, high turnover, and missed opportunities, while effective alignment can offer a competitive advantage and drive long-term growth.
