Patrick Akinwuntan is an Adjunct Faculty member at Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University (LBS), where he serves as the Academic Director of the Global CEO Africa Programme (GCEO-A). A seasoned Pan African banking and fintech expert, he brings over three decades of leadership experience across financial services, technology-enabled operations, and strategic transformation within Africa’s banking landscape.
He previously served as Managing Director & Regional Executive of Ecobank Nigeria, retiring in 2022 following a distinguished 26-year career within the Ecobank Group. During this period, he held several senior leadership roles, including Group Chief Financial Officer; Group Executive Director for Operations, Technology, Transactions, and Retail Banking; Group Executive Director for the Domestic Bank; and Managing Director/CEO of eProcess International, the Group’s technology and shared services subsidiary. His early career includes professional roles at EY International as well as investment banking experience at Manufacturer’s Merchant Bank (now Fidelity Bank).
At Lagos Business School, he contributes to degree and executive programmes with a focus on strategic leadership, digital transformation, retail banking innovation, ethics, professionalism and Pan African market strategy. He is also the convener of the 2024 LBS CFO Summit and actively supports the school’s executive education initiatives.
Akinwuntan is widely recognised for his leadership in driving financial innovation across the continent. He played a central role in introducing the first international credit card in West Africa, deploying a unified pan African mobile banking application, and enabling instant cross border fund transfers across 33 countries in 18 currencies. His work reflects a long-standing commitment to financial inclusion, digital innovation, and scalable retail banking models across emerging markets.
His governance experience spans several leading financial and corporate institutions. He has served as a non-executive director on the boards of Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), FMDQ Securities Exchange, First Securities Discount House (FSDH), and was the pioneer Chairman of Accion Microfinance Bank Limited. He currently serves on the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), previously chaired the Bankers’ Committee Ethics and Professionalism Committee (2018–2022), and holds independent non-executive directorships at Airtel Nigeria, MudoZangl Nigeria Limited, and Opolo Global Innovation Limited.
Akinwuntan was named Best Retail Banker in Africa in 2016 by The Asian Banker. He co-chairs the Advisory Board of Retail Banking Councils for Africa and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fintech Association of Nigeria.
He holds an MBA from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, and an alumnus of the Harvard Business School Senior Executive Program. He is also the Founder and CEO of PAA Crown Limited, a pan African financial services investment firm.
Patrick is a Knight of St. Mulumba, Choir Ambassador of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland, Lagos and Baba Ewe of SS Peter & Paul Pro-Cathedral Catholic Church, Ile-Ife, Osun State. He is married to Lady Eva Akinwuntan, chartered accountant, banker and the Worthy President of Ladies of St Mulumba, Lekki Sub-council. They are blessed with four children.
