Lagos Business School (LBS) recently hosted an insightful “How to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship” workshop, giving participants direct access to the Chevening team and a successful past awardee. The session, held in collaboration with the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos, was designed to equip aspiring scholars with the key strategies to navigate the highly competitive application process.
The Chevening team emphasised the programme’s mission to develop global leaders, urging candidates to strive for more than just academic excellence. The core advice focused on crafting compelling essays that clearly demonstrate leadership potential, a strong networking plan, and a realistic, high-impact career plan upon returning to Nigeria. Applicants were advised to use concrete, measurable examples to showcase their influence and impact, rather than simply listing responsibilities. The mantra was: “Show, don’t just tell.”
Adding invaluable depth to the discussion was a Chevening alumnus, Osita Uche James. Sharing his personal journey, he highlighted the importance of persistence and authenticity. He encouraged applicants to view the application as a pitch for investment in their future, clearly articulating how a one-year Master’s in the UK will fast-track their ability to create positive change in their home country. His experience validated the team’s advice, emphasising that a focused narrative, strong course choices, and a genuine passion for national development are the pillars of a winning application.
The workshop provided a clear roadmap for attendees, leaving them motivated and strategically prepared to submit applications that stand out.
