Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre Supports Climate Governance Initiative Nigeria, Hosts Secretariat

The Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre (LBSSC) is proud to announce it will be hosting the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) Nigeria secretariat. CGI Nigeria, already established as the 74th chapter of the Global Climate Governance Initiative (CGI), plays a crucial role in mobilising board-level action on climate change within Nigerian businesses.

The CGI is a key part of the Chapter Zero Alliance, a global initiative of the World Economic Forum (WEF), uniting over 100,000 non-executive directors and chairs worldwide dedicated to integrating climate considerations into boardroom decisions. CGI Nigeria’s secretariat is led by Mrs Olawunmi Asekun in her capacity as Executive Director of the Chapter, and LBSSC is delighted to host her and the rest of the CGI Nigeria team. In addition to hosting the secretariat, the dean of LBS, Professor Olayinka David-West, also serves on the advisory board of CGI Nigeria.

“Hosting the Climate Governance Initiative Nigeria Secretariat is strategically aligned with Lagos Business School’s commitment to responsible business and corporate sustainability,” says Mrs. Orevaoghene Atanya, Director of the LBS Sustainability Centre and member of the CGI Nigeria Steering Committee. “Supporting this initiative allows us to further our mission of impacting the practice of management, especially in the area of corporate governance and risk management by engaging board chairs and directors. This should lead to more adoption of climate action and resilience practices through economic activity in Nigeria in an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable way.”

Pioneered in Nigeria by Mrs. Adepeju Adebajo, CGI Nigeria is a private sector and individual directors’ membership initiative, guided by an Advisory Board and supported by a Steering Committee. The initiative works collaboratively with a broad spectrum of corporate governance stakeholders nationwide. Its core purpose is to equip board Chairs, CEOs, Executive, and Non-Executive Directors with the vital business-relevant climate and sustainability knowledge needed to drive impactful action at the board level within various companies and industries.

Founding members of CGI Nigeria include prominent organisations such as MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Lafarge Africa Plc, Siemens Nigeria, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Deloitte Nigeria, and United Africa Company of Nigeria (UAC), among others.
