Constantine Imafidon Tongo
is a senior lecturer in the Department of Human Resources
Management/Organisational Behaviour at Lagos Business School. He
currently facilitates sessions and teaches organisational behavior in
the MBA and PhD programmes of the school respectively.
He began his professional career as a business development
manager of a manufacturing company, the Freedom Group, which was in the
business of mining and processing solid minerals in Nigeria. There he
served as an internal business consultant with the responsibility of
generating new business ideas and expanding the overall frontiers of the
company. He later joined Centre piece Management Consultants, where he
was involved with facilitating sessions on Manpower Development
Programmes organised for giant corporations like the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the National Fertilizer Company of
Nigeria (NAFCON).
After enjoying a good feel of industrial life for about six
years, his scholarly disposition led him to start a career at Covenant
University. At Covenant University he was a faculty member of the
Industrial Relations/ Human Resources Management Programme of the
institution, and was involved with the teaching of such courses as
behavioural science, collective bargaining, motivation and productivity
at the university until he joined LBS.
His strong flair for quantitative analysis provided him with
the adequate impetus for seeking ways of developing operations
research-based models (linear programming, dynamic programming, Markov
chains and models on artificial intelligence) that can help with the
effective allocation of scarce human resources to the various operations
of an enterprise. To this end, Tongo’s PhD thesis at the University of
Benin, Nigeria became a watershed in the area of effective allocation of
police patrol efforts in crime prone areas in Nigeria, and the world
over. An excerpt of his PhD thesis has since been published by the
International Journal of Operational Research.
He has many articles which have either been accepted or
published in peer reviewed journals such as the International Journal of
Management (IJM), Journal of Management Systems (JMS), World Review of
Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development (WREMSD), and
Management and Organisational History (MOH). He has also contributed
chapters to some contemporary books on management theory and practice.
Dr Tongo’s areas of research include knowledge management,
management of organisational cultures, collective work motivation,
public service motivation, organisational commitment and
labour-management relations. He is still very active in research and
management consulting.
