5 things to know about the upcoming Lagos Business School MBA BGS Debate Competition

Agriculture is currently the highest employer of labour in Nigeria responsible for 48 percent of the nation’s workforce. Digital technology, on the other hand, is spurring a huge transformation in business and organisational activities while also driving innovation and creativity.

In a first of its kind event, Lagos Business School’s (LBS) Full Time MBA 16, Executive MBA 22 & 23 and Modular Executive MBA 5 & 6 participants will be exchanging divergent views on the contributions of agriculture and digital technology to Nigeria’s economy.

The debate competition set to hold this Saturday, June 23, will see the participating sides attempt to convince the audience on which sector has been the better catalyst for the country’s economic development.

Here are 5 things you should know as you anticipate the event:

  1. The debate competition is organised by the MBA 16 class in collaboration with the LBS’ chapter of the Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) society.  The BGS is an international honour society exclusive to business programmes accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and its LBS chapter was established in November 2017.

  2. The event will provide students and attendees a platform to engage in quality networking with leaders in various industries such as Vice President, Sahel Capital Agribusiness Managers Limited, Adebusoye Ayodeji; Skills Development Manager, GE West Africa Global Growth and Operations, Oluwayemisi Fajemidagba ; Regional Sales Director West Africa – Applications Cluster Leader, Oracle, Oludare Ogunlade and more.

  3. The debate competition will use the UK parliamentary debate style where both sides will be described as ‘proposition’ and ‘opposition’. The topic being debated upon will be described as ‘motion’, a ‘chairperson’ will control the debate and the ‘adjudicators’ will monitor and later announce the winning team.

  4. To cap the competition, an award ceremony will hold to honour the LBS Professor of the Year. This prestigious award will be presented to a professor in the School who has championed the LBS and BGS values of honor, wisdom and service.

  5. The 2018 MBA BGS debate competition will hold at the School’s auditorium on Saturday, June 23 at 2.30pm and attendance is free.
