In recent times, there has been an upsurge in the number of women starting and running businesses. Globally, women owned enterprises account for a third of all businesses in the formal economy. These enterprises contribute notably to the development of a country, reduce poverty and promote self-reliance. However, due to the harsh economic terrain and dearth of sound management practices many of these SMEs are administered with the profit motive. This orientation often times fail to deliver long term growth that these enterprises yearn for - mainly, because this model neglects society and environment the as key constituents that contribute to the enterprise's success.
Alternatively, the sustainability model; considers financial success vis a vis societal and environmental progress and offers a better growth strategy for SMEs. The model drives innovation, which can deliver productivity and efficiency gains for the business. In this workshop, we show that sustainability is not just about the environment, but an important step towards an efficient business model that reduces waste, cuts costs and increases profit.
